In my last post I said I didn't know yet if my SSH client would ever go public, and that you'd read about it here first if it did. So here it is: it's called Burrow Client, version 1.0.0 is out today, and it's free and open source.

What it is

Burrow is a local-first SSH client for macOS and Linux. Your hosts, keys and passwords stay on your own machine, in an encrypted vault that only opens with your master password. No account, no telemetry, and nothing goes to a cloud unless you host that cloud yourself.

It has all the things I kept missing: saved hosts you connect to with one click, snippets for the commands you type every day, tabs and split panes, and an SFTP browser for moving files around. If you work on more than one computer, you can run a small sync server of your own, and it only ever stores data it can't read.

How to use it

Download it from the Burrow Client page. There's a build for macOS on Apple Silicon and an AppImage for Linux.

Get Burrow Client

On macOS, open the .dmg and drag the app into Applications. The builds aren't signed yet, so macOS will refuse to open it the first time. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway", you only have to do that once. On Linux, make the AppImage executable and run it.

Once it's open, set a master password, add your first host with "New host" and hit play to connect. From there you can open more tabs, split the view, save snippets or browse files over SFTP.

Tell me what you think

This is the first public release, so there will be rough edges. If something breaks or a feature is missing, open an issue on GitHub or send me a message. And if Burrow saves you some hassle, there's a Ko-fi button on the page.

Thanks for reading, and happy connecting!

Tell me what I got wrong, or what you’d have done instead.
