Why I just switched to Linux

I didn't rage quit Windows. There was no blue screen, no lost work, or anything like that. It was more that four separate annoyances kept showing up in my week, and at some point I noticed that none of them were problems on the machine I actually enjoyed working on. So I backed everything up, wiped the drive, and put a linux distro on it.

Updates on my schedule, not theirs

Control is the part that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't been annoyed by it yet. Windows decides when it restarts. It decides which apps come back after an update, which settings get reset, and how many clicks it takes to say no to something. Every one of those is small. Together they add up to a machine that has opinions about what I'm doing.

On linux I run the update when I want it, I know what it's going to change because it tells me, and nothing reinstalls itself. If I break something, that's on me. I'd much rather have that trade than a system that keeps itself tidy by overriding me.

Security and telemetry

I'm not going to pretend Linux is automatically secure, because it isn't, and a badly configured Linux box is worse than a well-managed Windows one. What changed for me is visibility. I can see what's installed, what's running, and what's talking to the network, and I can remove any of it without a registry edit and a prayer.

The telemetry side is simpler. I don't want my OS to be a data collection product, and I don't want to relitigate that with every feature update. Linux doesn't put me in that position, so I stopped thinking about it.

What actually went wrong

Some things did. Not everything has a Linux version, and for one or two I had to find a different tool rather than the same one. My first day was slower than a normal day, because muscle memory is real and I kept reaching for shortcuts that weren't there.

Gaming actually works amazing tho

Would I do it again

Yes, and sooner. The honest version is that the switch cost me about a day and gave back something I'd stopped noticing was missing: the machine does what I tell it and nothing else.

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your new machine if you take the jump.

Thoughts on this one?

Tell me what I got wrong, or what you’d have done instead.
